This is an rpg-character journal for
lawandorder_siu. Robert Goren is a creation of Dick Wolf, not me. This is for entertainment purposes only.
Name: Robert Goren, Detective 1st Grade
Age:45
Appearance: Bobby is 6'4" and somewhat stockily built. He has dark, but greying, short curly hair and dark brown eyes. His skin tone is light, and typically he has about a day or two's beard growth.
Background:
Bobby grew up in Brooklyn, with his mother who was a librarian, his father who was a salesman, and his older brother Richard. At the age of seven, he realized that his mother was different, and even “sick” as his father put it, and later he understood her schizophrenia. Bobby spent a large amount of his time looking into schizophrenia, in order to understand what was going on, which helped to spark his interest into the study of behavior. When he was 11, his father left home, leaving Bobby, his brother and their mother on their own.
He went through school quickly, though he didn't always focus on his studies, often finding other uses for his high intelligence and studying on his own time. Bobby was very imaginative, and had impressive reasoning, problem solving and had a quick eye for patterns, but he was also socially awkward and preferred most of the time to stay by himself. After high school, he went to NYU for a year before his mother had a breakdown. Without Richard there, who had quickly moved out as soon as he could and never cared to look back, he found that he couldn’t take care of his mother on his own anymore. Once she was in a care facility, he joined the Army with the intent of trying to leave things behind too.
While in the Army, he was an officer in the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), and was first stationed first in Germany, then South Korea. When his service was over, he returned to the city, finding that he couldn’t abandon his mother like his father and brother had done. He still feels bad for leaving her alone while he was gone.
Bobby went into the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and spent four years there on his BA of Criminology and Forensic Psychology. Afterwards he went through the police academy and spent a year as a patrolman before quickly being accepted as a detective. He was placed in narcotics, where he quickly proved to be a valuable asset, as he could dive into a criminal’s mind. Bobby had the ability to use words instead of action, and to talk anyone down, and break them in a short amount of time. His methods were unusual, but he got the job done. He organized and ran three major sting operations which resulted in 27 arrests and 27 convictions.
Despite his success rate in narcotics, it was difficult for him to keep a partner. Often, other detectives would find his methods too erratic and hard to keep up with. His somewhat anti-social personality didn’t add to the matter. After a few years in narcotics, he was transferred to the Major Case Squad under Captain Deakins. The same pattern of partners followed, and while it didn’t effect Bobby’s work so much, it was frustrating for him, the partners, and the captain. He was in danger of being reassigned when he was partnered with Alex Eames, who while she nearly requested a new partner, found that there was really a deeper understanding, and she decided to stay.
Goren and Eames have been partners for five years.
Personality: He has a strong personality, the kind that draws attention. He is normally bouncy and rather hyper, but he can turn serious. It’s often difficult to tell what Bobby is truly thinking, he is able to hide his true feelings well and make people believe what he’s saying even if it’s wrong. He is often socially awkward, feeling out of place among a lot of people, but among the right company that he trusts, his normal walls will shut down and give a glimpse of the complex man inside.
Traits, Weaknesses, Quirks: Bobby is very eccentric in most things that he does, including investigating. His methods are unusual, and usually come with his trademark curious headtilt. He has a vivid and active imagination, which often gives him insight into cases, and he has an ability to spot patterns quickly. Because of his behavioral studies and family history, Bobby is able to dive into the mind of a criminal, through their actions and evidence, which then later gives him the advantage in interrogation. He does have a way with words, and when he was in Narcotics, he was sought after for large and sometimes dangerous cases, because of his skills in being able to talk people down. It’s saved his life a few times.
The history of schizophrenia in his family has always been a risk to Bobby, and he knows it well. He is protective of his mother, whom both his father and his older brother abandon, and continues to take care of her as much as he can. While he can usually go into a case unbiased, Bobby does not tolerate men, fathers especially, who leave their families, and it has been known to affect his judgment. Those closest to him he is also protective of, fearing abandonment again, though he doesn’t openly show it.
He appears at times to have a hard to focusing, almost to the level of ADD, which includes running around the room and changing subjects at random and unexpected times. Many times he also appears to be disorganized, or chaotic, but amid the chaos Bobby knows exactly what he’s doing. He doesn't normally drive, prefering to sit in the car and think, and he's left-handed.
